What is CIPLA?
CIPLA is not the name of a single specific pill, but a brand and, at the same time, the name of a large international pharmaceutical company founded in India in 1935. Under the CIPLA brand, several hundred names of medicines are produced: from anti-infective and antiviral drugs to cardiological, oncological, endocrinological, and respiratory agents. The company's products are registered in more than 80 countries, and its manufacturing sites are certified according to international GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) standards. That is why in pharmacy catalogs, the name CIPLA is most often found as a manufacturer's designation next to the specific international nonproprietary name of the active substance.
The dosage forms of CIPLA drugs are highly diverse and selected for specific clinical tasks. These include immediate- or extended-release tablets and capsules, dispersible (orally disintegrating) formats for patients with swallowing difficulties, powders for preparing suspensions in pediatrics, solutions for injections and infusions, as well as metered-dose inhalers and dry powder inhalers for the treatment of bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Another significant area is antiviral agents for the treatment of chronic viral hepatitis. The second major area is respiratory medicine. Inhaled CIPLA drugs are used for bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, allergic rhinitis, and broncho-obstructive syndrome. CIPLA Dosage
There is no universal dose for CIPLA drugs — it depends on the active substance, indication, and the patient's condition. Antibacterial agents are usually prescribed in short courses lasting from 5 to 14 days, with a dosing frequency of one to two times a day. Drugs for the treatment of chronic conditions — hypertension, dyslipidemia, asthma — are taken continuously, with efficacy evaluated every 4–12 weeks. The starting dose is often minimal, with gradual titration to the target dose.
Dose adjustment is mandatory in patients with renal impairment, as many molecules are excreted by the kidneys, and in individuals with impaired liver function. To calculate the dose, the doctor relies on the glomerular filtration rate and liver function test results. Elderly patients are usually recommended a lower starting dose due to slowed metabolism. In pediatrics, the dose is calculated per kilogram of body weight, rather than by age.
How to take CIPLA correctly?
Tablets and capsules are usually swallowed whole, without crushing, with a sufficient amount of drinking water — at least 150–200 ml. Some drugs are taken on an empty stomach one hour before meals, while others are taken during or immediately after meals to reduce stomach irritation. Inhaled forms require the correct technique: a slow deep breath, holding the breath for 5–10 seconds, and rinsing the mouth after using a corticosteroid. Adhering to the same time of administration every day helps maintain a stable concentration of the substance in the blood.
If a regular dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered, but not if less than half of the interval remains until the next dose. Doubling the dose to compensate for a missed one is strictly forbidden. A regular regimen is particularly critical for antibiotics and antiretroviral drugs, as interruptions contribute to the development of microbial resistance. You should not stop the course on your own at the first sign of improvement.
Side effects of CIPLA
The most common adverse reactions affect the digestive tract: nausea, epigastric discomfort, changes in appetite, diarrhea, or constipation. Headache, dizziness, general weakness, and sleep disturbances at the beginning of therapy are also quite common. These manifestations usually resolve on their own during the first days of the body's adaptation. Inhaled forms can cause hoarseness of voice and oral candidiasis, which is prevented by rinsing.
Uncommon reactions include skin rash, itching, urticaria, elevated liver enzymes, and changes in blood counts. Rare but potentially dangerous conditions include anaphylactic reactions, angioedema, severe liver damage, and severe skin syndromes. Immediate medical attention is required for difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, jaundice, dark urine, or a widespread rash with blisters. The individual response of the body may differ from that described in the instructions, so any unusual symptoms should be reported to a doctor.
Contraindications of CIPLA
An absolute contraindication for any CIPLA drug is a confirmed hypersensitivity to the active substance or excipients, as well as a history of severe allergic reactions to drugs of the same class. Depending on the molecule, specific limitations are added: severe liver or kidney failure, decompensated heart diseases, uncontrolled heart rhythm disorders, and certain hematological conditions. Relative contraindications are considered situations where treatment is possible but requires increased monitoring and a reduced dose.
During pregnancy and breastfeeding, use is allowed only when the expected benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus or infant, and always by decision of a doctor. In pediatric practice, only those forms and dosages that are officially approved for the corresponding age group are used. Elderly patients require special attention due to polypharmacy and age-related decline in kidney function. Interaction of CIPLA with other drugs and alcohol
Many CIPLA agents are metabolized with the involvement of the cytochrome P450 enzyme system, so their effect may be enhanced or weakened when combined with antifungal drugs, macrolides, anticonvulsants, and St. John's wort preparations. Antacids, sorbents, and iron or calcium supplements can reduce the absorption of antibiotics — an interval of 2–4 hours should be maintained between their administration. In the first days of therapy, it is advisable to assess your own reaction before driving. If concentration disorders occur, you should abstain from such activities.
